THANKSGIVING for the voiceover life!

Happy belated Thanksgiving everyone! I’m grateful for each one of you who manage to find time from your busy schedules to check out this blog.

I’m grateful for my health, family & friends, and for the voiceover action that I’ve enjoyed this week. Did a voicemail for a new client in Florida, recorded a really fun internet drama project that — believe it or not — involved a lot of barking & growling! Thanks God for Entertainer’s Secret throat spray. It kept me going.

Got an email from a potential client to send in an auddy for a very nice gig. [Fingers crossed, toes crossed, eyes crossed!]

One of the on-line sites with which I’m registered –voices.com– has done a major revamp of their site, so I’ve been waiting for the dust to settle before auditioning. Guess it’s time to get back to work now & see what’s happening on the site. Time is money! I love my job!

The staff at voices.com have been brilliant with answering my questions, and keeping up to date on their efforts to get things working properly.

Here’s an interesting article written by the fab motivational author: Dr. Kem Thompson — reprinted with her permission. It’s aimed at women, but I’m sure guys can benefit from this advice as well!

HOW TO PROSPER IN ANY ECONOMY
By Dr Kem Thompson

As a woman, you are in a great position to prosper in any economy. This is because there are certain traits that are inbuilt in you, that come naturally to you as a woman, which are key when used properly, to achieving growth and prosperity regardless of the current economic climate.

One key trait is the desire to serve others. As a woman, you have a ‘default setting’ of service (which prepares you to selflessly ‘serve’ and provide for your offspring, and which prepares you to love your spouse/partner unconditionally). This trait can work against you (when you take it to the extreme and become a doormat or slave figure: this in turn strips you of any self-respect and dignity, and makes you feel resentful towards the one you’re supposed to love) when you don’t balance it with spending time nurturing and growing as a person (‘me-time’).

This natural trait though, is the foundation for your prosperity, but there are conditions you need to meet before you can benefit from your natural tendency.

First let’s see how this trait helps you prosper. In business, you must keep your focus outbound: you must constantly seek to find out the needs of others outside of yourself (your prospects and customers), and find ways to meet those needs. That’s one aspect of marketing you can’t afford to overlook: seeking problems and offering solutions to them.

In any economy, people have problems and are willing to pay someone to solve them, sometimes even more so in a ‘bad’ economy. That’s why some of the most successful businesses today were borne during times of financial depression, as history testifies.

This concept of seeking problems and wanting to offer solutions is something that comes naturally to you. Use it to your advantage and reap the results.

There are a few things you should bear in mind when doing this though.:

· – You must expect to be paid for your service. Even God says that the Preacher must be paid for his preaching. So if you’re offering a service that provides a genuine solution to a real problem for someone, ask for a price that reflects the value of your solution.

· – Be proactive, persistent and consistent in promoting your service/product. When you are clear on what you have to offer, who stands to benefit from it and how they will benefit from it, you must take the initiative and do something daily to make people aware of your solution. Yes, you are responsible for consistently, regularly, marketing your business and service(s). It goes without saying that without marketing, you’re out of a business. (if you don’t own a business, you’re at the mercy of ‘the economic climate’. No matter what your day job or career is, you must, as an empowered woman, take control of your finances and wealth by having an additional income stream which is your own business, with you as boss.
· – Focus on the benefits you provide, and talk about them whenever you get the chance. Remember, it’s not about you (inbound thinking), it’s about your customers and what you can do for them (outbound thinking). Outbound thinking is what has got Bill Gates and Oprah where they are right now.
· – Be in a constant state of gratitude – for what you have and what you are able to provide for others. This puts you in a mindframe to attract more of the same.

Think about these things. Change the way you view your finances and your economy (as opposed to ‘the’ economy).

I’m not experiencing any credit crunch. Rather I’m currently experiencing growth and expansion in my business and finances, so I don’t know what the fuss is about, concerning the economy. What I do know is that there are real needs out there for many women, and I am helping them solve those problems, and they are happy to pay me to solve them, because it’s costing them more to remain with the problems, than to pay me to solve them, see.

I say this not to impress you, but to impress upon you the truth that as long as you
(a)Find the needs of your prospects and customers/clients and create solutions for those needs
(b)Market your solutions to those that need it,
(c)Expect and ask for a price that reflects the value of your solution – remember, your solution should cost less to your client than the problem they’re going through – and you should communicate this to them so they see the wisdom in investing in your solution…and
d) continue to focus on the benefits you provide, you too will enjoy prosperity and growth in this and any economy…as long as you consistently do these things, you will prosper.
(e)Stay grateful daily, for what you have and what you’re able to provide as well as what good is coming to you right now.

LETTING GO of the 9 to 5 — voicing after hours

lady-with-mic2

For those of us engaged in part-time or other suppplementary employment while building up to a full time voice over career — how do we get our energy up for recording auditions and gigs after a full day at the office?

Here are a few tips that I’m finding useful to squeeze that last bit of energy out:

  • The first thing is to drink lots of water during the day, and try not to drink so much coffee or tea with milk — especially in the afternoon.
  • Then when I get home I have more water and brush my teeth to lesson any mouth stickiness.
  • Next I make a cup of herbal tea (one without liquorice or other ingredients that can coat the mouth),  while humming along with the radio station for a gentle warm-up.
  • Then, switch to comfy clothes[this sometimes includes pajamas.  :D ]

NOW for the serious warm up! I am often feeling quite sluggish, so I use my ‘step’. I put on more upbeat music and do aerobic exercises on my step bar while reciting tongue twisters (multi tasking!) for about 5 minutes.

By now I feel much more warmed up, buzzing & less fatigued — AND my breathing is more expansive and free.

A couple of sips of tea, a squirt of Entertainer’s Secret throat spray & I’m ready to start recording. I print off my auditions or scripts, give it a read aloud, mark it, and I’m away.

Even though it may be later in the day or evening, we’ve still got to take as much care with recording, capturing the feeling of the piece, and editing as we would if we were starting fresh at the beginning of the day — instead of the day’s end.

Does anybody else have tips on things that they do to rev themselves up for a voiceover session at the end of the day?

Please share them with us!

Here’s a lovely meditation which I found in Wendy Braun’s

 Actor Inspiration Newsletter:

I trust in the Timing

I breathe in and feel myself trust in the timing of this journey.

I exhale and release feeling that things aren’t working out for me.

I breathe in and feel myself trust in the timing of this journey.

Cheers!

My 2nd Audio Blog…More nuggets on positive living and inspiration

This is a picture of beautiful koi fish living in a canal in a small village in Japan.

I dug up a book today that has been sitting on our bookcase for ages. I bought it and never had time to read it. I’ve been doing a lot of voice over marketing and voice over auditions lately. I just had a hunch to pull it out this book. Maybe the Universe is trying to tell me something!

The book  — by Dr. Daniel T. Drubin –is called:

Busting Your Rut — 33 Practical Lessons to Alter Your Destiny,

Transform Your Life and Free Your  Spirit

I did a little recording of a section from the book entitled:  Change Happens When You Do

Let’s all stay positive no matter what’s going on in the world and keep on moving forward! Please click on the link below to go to the recording.
